Site Beat - MightyMerchant Monthly Newsletter > September 2007

September 2007

Greetings from MightyMerchant.

Most business owners are always looking for ways to get their product in the public eye. This month's SiteBeat includes two interesting ways to do that: Google Maps now posts reviews of businesses, and ReviewMe.com, which is a service allowing ecommerce site owners to solicit reviews of their products. Take a look at whether or not that service is right for you. You might also be interested in the new article we have added to our site, "Search Engine Optimization (SEO) through FAQ, Glossaries, and Links Pages."

MightyMerchant continues to expand in more ways than one. Last month, we moved into new, larger office spaces and we are looking to hire a website designer to help us keep up with our growing client list. One change this month which we're excited about is that Google has increased our page rank. Learn how this relates to your site and why it is important. And, MightyMerchant now has a blog! Read our Announcements section for more information on these topics.

Our Client Profile this month features Duann Barr, one of our newest customers, and her site, SwankySlings.com.

As always, we welcome your feedback. Please contact us with comments as well as
suggestions for future editions.

-- Our Google Page Rank Improves!

About every three months, Google updates the values it assigns web pages based on its PageRank algorithm. In the most recent PageRank update of August 8, MightyMerchant's page rank moved from 5 to 6, on a scale of 0 to 10.

Only Google has a page rank of 10. Highly regarded sites such as CNN.com have a PR of 9. The exact method of how Google determines page rank is clouded in secrecy, and it is probably the one secret every webmaster wishes they knew! The key to page rank is probably the strength and quality of all incoming links to your site. MightyMerchant has links from each of our customers and provides a link to each customer, but it's important that each site cultivate links from other sites in order to improve their own page rank. One way to do that is to move content beyond just what you are selling, and we have addressed that in our featured article this month: "SEO through FAQ, Glossaries, and Links Pages." Your success in major search engines depends on linking as a chief component. With 0 incoming links it is very unlikely that your site will rank well.

If you want to see your own page rank and that of your competitors, there are two good choices for toolbars. The Google Toolbar works for Firefox and Internet Explorer. The SeoQuake Toolbar is available only for Firefox. Both are free and offer site info as you browse.

-- Announcing our blog

We've been recommending blogs as a way to keep your website content fresh and updated. (Search engines like changing content.) So we are taking our own advice and starting the MightyMerchant blog. Go to http://blog.mightymerchant.com and check it out; there are a few posts and comments already available. Signing up for the RSS feed will keep you informed of new content, which is added every two to four days. The Search feature allows you to look for specific content, or browse by categories. We plan to have up-to-the-minute industry news, tips, and knowledge useful to the webmaster and small business owner.

-- Practical eCommerce magazine features MightyMerchant

Staci Schipporeit, co-owner of MightyMerchant, was recently interviewed by Practical eCommerce for the print edition of their September/October 2007 magazine feature, "One Hundred Notable Shopping Carts." The Practical eCommerce website is a good resource for marketing and optimization articles, and they have a free email newsletter, Ecommerce Notes.

-- New article

As mentioned above, we have added a new article to our site: "SEO through FAQ, Glossaries, and Links Pages." This article describes ways to add creative content to your site beyond simple product descriptions.

-- New service: "Review me on Google"

Google Maps (http://maps.google.com) now allows reviews of businesses. When searching for a particular place in Google Maps, people can click on the "More Info" link for that place. From there they can click on "Write a Review" and in seconds do just that. Add your business to Google Maps (if you haven't already done that!), then put a link on your site saying, "Review me on Google." It's free, and positive, un-monetized reviews like that are golden for business. (See our overview of ReviewMe.com for info on how to solicit reviews from bloggers.)
